I think to some extent you are splitting hairs.
Holding a public debate on the subject certainly means that it is being discussed.
Possibly the money which is supposed to be made available from Saudi and the discussion is all in the air. But the matter exists.
Do you feel we should encourage a large mosque to be built?
Just seen this
| Quote: | The revelations will put further scrutiny on plans for a "mega mosque" in east London by a group called Tablighi Jamaat, who are closely linked to the Deobandi movement.
The £100 million plan to build the "Islamic village" next to the Olympic site is already mired in controversy after intelligence services said the group was a recruiting ground for al Qaeda. |

Did you try contacting the organizers?

I've emailed Alan Craig - so far no acknowledgement. _________________ May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will ... (Hebrews 13:20-21) |

If you google "megamosque Newham", there is loads of information about the proposed mosque.
There is already a large mosque in Regents Park and there are plenty of small mosques. I don't see the need for a huge one in East London. I have no objection to people following their chosen faith but there seems little point in this sort of building. Muslims make up 2.7% of the UK population, the highest concentration being in London - apparently 8.5% of people in London are Muslim. So - why the need for a great big mosque? Particularly when there already is a big one in London.
Of course, it may not happen, there has yet to be planning permission. I think Bobby may be right that some are whipping up hysteria about it, nevertheless we need to be awake about the possibility.
Some years ago there was a proposal for a mosque (a smaller one!) quite near to where I live. Local people objected to it, so it didn't happen. _________________ Vix |

John
I don't believe I am splitting hairs at all but perhaps you could explain why you think I am doing just that.
WITL
Since I work during the day (and don't live anywhere near Newham anyway) phoning Alan Craig is impractical.
My concern remains (as it always has on this issue) that there is a danger of Christian scaremongering and thus fuelling a feeling that all Muslims are (potential) terrorists. I used to have a website in Favourites that was a compendium of links to many local newspapers across the whole of the UK. Sadly since I had my PC upgraded everything in the Favourites list was lost. I shall have to try Googling for the site so I can see if the local newspaper has any details of the meeting. |

I only said "to some extent".
There is a difference between discussing it, confering about it, proposing it, supporting it and opposing it.
Being somewhat illdefined I was classing them together. _________________ The effectiveness of a posting is inversely proportional to its length.

John, if you think I am splitting hairs at all then of course it is "to some extent". You either think that I am or you think that I'm not. I don't believe I am because I can't see what distinction I am supposed to be making. That sort of thing is what hair-splitting is after all, isn't it?
I've managed to find an online version of The Newham Recorder http://www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/search/newhamrecorder/?searchparam=mega%20mosque
but there's nothing about Friday's meeting. Maybe it gets updated later in the week. I'll carry on searching. |

There are internet reports of a meeting on September 7 concerning this,
yet your web has nothing later than Feb. 26 07.
Many were concerned & signed a petition, only to find aspects of that
petition were spurious, & that no planning application existed.
What is the truth? How should we pray?
I live in an immigrant area in West London.
| Quote: | Dear Ian,
Many thanks for your email. Sorry about our website.
The masterplan for the mosque should be published soon - probably by the end of the year or early next year. Then the planning battle proper will start.
My prayer is that we can democratically debate the issue without irreparable conflict and division in the local community.
Sincerely,
Alan Craig |

All of the internet references to the meeting on September 7th would appear to be the same news release that angel posted the other day. That everything else dates back to 2006 or even earlier suggests to me that this is actually a non-issue which brings me back to the point about scaremongering that I mentioned in at least two previous posts.
Given that no planning application had been submitted a petition to stop something from being built was at the very least a case of jumping the gun don't you think? Is that sort of premature (kneejerk?) reaction right for Christians or were they deliberately being misled? If so those doing the misleading have been scurrilously irresponsible.
What should we pray for? That truth and honesty as opposed to partisan rhetoric will prevail on both sides.
P.S. How does Alan Craig know that the planning application will go in later this year or early next? It's not as if he's submitting it himself. |
