Any Tolkien fans here? I read LOTR several times a year and never get tired of it .. I love to scope, depth and imagination of it. I am slowly plodding through the Silmarillion at the moment although frankly finding that a bit more hard going. I'd love to discuss LOTR with any fans though! _________________ Europeforum, everyone welcome :) |

The Silmarillion and Tom Bombadill I found really hard work.
I am listening to the book of LOTR at the moment in the car. It's a couple of years since I read it but only because there seems to be so much else demanding a read.
In all honesty, I am grateful to LOTR for setting me on a course of literature many years ago but now other writers of the genre have surpassed Tolkien for me. It should be noted though that even though others may have surpassed Tolkien they couldn't have done it without standing on his shoulders. _________________ ".... love thy neighbour as thyself." is the hardest thing I have ever done.... |

The Silmarillion has defeated me.
I have read LOTR three times. Can't stand it again.
The film is SO SLOW MOVING I cannot stand that either.
Sorry

jtheb, how can you say that the LOTR film(s) are slow?
I tried Silmarillion years ago (in my teens) but failed to complete it. I agree with Sis that other fantasy writers have equalled or even surpassed Tolkien but still think that LOTR is an epic masterpiece.
Moose, what in particular do you want to discuss about it?
P.S. to jtheb - has someone branded that snail or is it wearing a stylish new sort of sticking plaster? |

Quite easy. You open your mouth and say "LOTR films are slow"

I too was defeated by the Silmarillion.
I have also been disappointed by works that Tolkien Jnr has had a hand in, but then to be fair, he does have a lot to live up to I suppose. Knowing that though, he should perhaps have not put his toe in the water. _________________ Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary use words. — St. Francis of Assisi |
