I need your opinions,please. Is it okay to leave my computer on all the time?
I'm not concerned with electrical cost,rather, I'm concerned about it frying itself!!!!
My sister said she never turns off her system all the way. Maybe the monitor while she's gone at work(even tho she has a screen saver), but never the cpu. She's done this for over 3 years+states she never had a problem.
If my system isn't going to burn itself up, I thought I'd leave mine on all the time as it wouldn't have to go thru the whole process of finding all my settings again prior to start-up.
Comments please?

I have 6 computers running at home and they are never turned off. I turn the monitor off when not in use but the PC's stay on. Same at work, my laptop is on 24/7.
Apart from items like cooling fans (moving parts) a PC is pretty much solid state electronics and actually prefers not to go through the startup/shut down process. If a PC is going to fail it is likely to be in the first few months of use. After that initial period it will generally last longer than we tend to keep them anyway.
There is a school of thought that says you shouldn't turn them off. Solid state electronics have no moving parts and it is movement that wears an item out. By turning a PC on and off you actually push a small surge of electricity through the circuitry each time it is switched on or off causing an effective movement, making the solid state circuits into moving parts therefore likely to wear faster.
The only other thing to consider is the environmental effect of continually using electricity. My systems are set to power down hard drives etc that are not in use overnight to minimize power usage.

It is the waste of electiricty that worries me about leaving anything unused on.

Couldn't agree more Pat. We have had this discussion on another forum many times.
We all (on the forum I mention) contribute our computing power to Berkley University for research into human diseases. On the one hand we want to help with the various research projects which are constantly breaking new ground and moving medicine ever closer to curing or alleviating some of the most horrible conditions that affect mankind, but on the other, the millions of computers in peoples homes running the programmes for Berkley to be effective must burn power thereby contributing to whatever problems that may cause.
It is a dilemma, but I genuinely believe that the six machines I have at home do more potential good for medical research than they contribute to any global problems. I don't generally encourage people to leave machines on 24/7 unless they are performing a genuine useful function.

A computer working is a differant matter. I was talking things being on stanby because its easier that turning them off.
BTW Nancy why do you have to find your settings if you turn your PC off? Sounds like a problem to solve.

Well.....the way my system is set up is......every time I start it up(after entering my password) it takes a few moments to run + states Windows is loading my personal settings.
Nothing terribly wrong with my system yet,but,I was just informed today that tech support for Windows SP2 will end in a year or two.
Has anyone heard more about this? When that happens,I'm gonna have to but a whole new system with Vista....sigh 
I'm hoping by that time all the bugs will be worked out.

Microsoft will stop supporting WinXP in 2008, but that is no reason to stop using it. The tech people you use will still support XP.
When was the last time you went to Microsoft for support? I'm guessing never, so just carry on. At this point in time don't be persuaded to go with Vista by any sales people.

Microsoft is the last place to go for support, they tell half truths and put nasty little spy programmes on your computer.

As I understand it Nancy, some months ago under the guise of their security updates which many people use, Microsoft pushed out a little spy program that checked to see if you had a legitimate copy of windows etc and reported back to Microsoft.
If you had anything 'dodgy' on your PC you then started to get pop-ups saying you were illegal and you can't get rid of the pop-ups etc.
It's fair comment that if you have illegal software you deserve all you get, but the real bone of contention is that Microsoft did this install without telling or asking anyone. Their update policy clearly states that they will not do that sort of thing and it is only to be used for security updates to protect their customer base. The point is that if they have done that covertly once, what else have they been doing and can we ever trust them again?
