I heard on the radio this morning that Tony Blair(sp?) will leave at the end of his current office?
What do you think brought this about?

You are certainly burning the "midnight oil" Sisyphus.
How long had he held the position+what were his responsibilities?
I don't know how things are run by you, but over here elected officials run for a certain length of time. It varies on location+position.
Can you tell me what position here in the U.S. would be closest to Prime Minister?

He's been PM for about ten years, Unlike the US our PM has no fixed term like the President. I suppose he would similar to your Majority Leader if you equate th Queen with the President as heads of state....

This article gives a detailed description of the history and powers of the office of British Prime Minister:

Actually, the Prime Minister has all the government powers of an American President, but is not Head of State - that's the job of the Queen.

Tony Blair has been hinting for months that he was going to resign, so it wasn't exactly surprising news. But, I say "Good riddance!" He has been the worst Prime Minister we have ever had. Apart from the next one, that is, which will presumably be Gordon Brown.

Depends on the criteria. Many would argue that Neville Chamberlain deserves the title for his policy of appeasement towards Hitler, which allowed the dictator to advance his aggressive policies without hindrance in the crucial period before the (inevitable) outbreak of war.

Moreover:
Quote:
Chamberlain was a Unitarian and did not accept the basic trinitarian belief of the Church of England, the first Prime Minister to officially reject this doctrine since the Duke of Grafton. This did not bar him from advising the King on appointments in the established church.

The fellow was clearly a bounder. Icon_laugh

My own choice (for the 20th. century, at least; the 19th. had some prime candidates for the honour) would be Harold Wilson, all Gannex mac and pipe and little else.

Mine would be Thatcher. However, aren't they all basically on the same side? Let's face it, Blair and Cameron are interchangeable yet they are supposed to be opposing. If Cam ever becomes PM I doubt we'll notice much difference. Wilson kept us out of Vietnam and I will forever be grateful to him for that.

Blair said 27th Sis.
I was amused today to see Brown has said he will improve education and and health. I thought Blair claimed to have done that already Icon_1087
