The infected bull in the Hindu temple ? Doesn't this make a mockery of all the thousands of livestock that were killed during the Foot and Mouth incident ?

Ah but they weren't deemed to be sacred were they Janie? Personally I believe that the bull should indeed be put down else a precedent is made that could have grave implications in any future foot and mouth epidemic.

Would you care to supply a link to something which outlines the new developments in this story?

As a matter of principle it should be put down.

However it is not known if the bull is infected. I have responded to skin test for years and I do not have TB.
The animal is isolated and will never be in the food chain or be giving milk.
Safetywise there is no real reason for putting it down.

Point taken but I think there is another principle here....as Bobby has already said this could set a precedent for any future foot and mouth outbreaks.
Livestock were eradicated on farms regardless of whether the individual animal was infected with F & T or not.
I suppose there is one solution though..if ever another outbreak were to occur, heaven forbid, the farmers could always say each and everyone of their livestock were *sacred*. Icon_tongue

This is not part of a herd it is an isolated animal which may not be infected.

if it showed symptoms then I woudl think it should be put down to avoid human cases.

I hear that it has been given a reprieve which is good bacteriology even if it is poor law.

Farmer recently had ALL his cows slaughtered, [Second time he has lost all his herd to F&M].
No reprieve, Just slaughter.

Dreadful. I remember the last F&M outbreak six years ago. We can only pray this one is better contained.

Not really the same thing as poor old Shambo who had TB. He could have been treated surely? TB isn't that big a deal nowadays. I saw him on the News being carted off to the knackers, made me think of Boxer in Animal Farm. Still, I am sure it was a quick end and at least it would have happened to him in isolation, animals become frightened when other animals being slaughtered.

Yes it is jtheb, or so I always understood. However, some time ago I saw Gordon Ramsay's pigs, Kim and Aggie, slaughtered (on TV) and one was killed in front of the other. I was surprised at the time. Perhaps the rule only applies to abbatoirs, these animals were slaughtered privately.
