Some scattered thoughts in relation to Christian service:- Jesus didn't do the miracle on His own, He used those who were there.
- Jesus' instructions had to be followed in order for the miracle to occur.
- The water turning into wine is something only Jesus could have done. Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 3 v 6 come to mind: I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.
- Those at the wedding sat up and took notice because the results were the opposite to the usual convention (of serving the best wine first)
God has chosen us as His servants. He will work through us if we follow His instructions. The results achieved will be something only He could have done, and will make others sit up and take notice. |

THanks, WitL, Theo, but what do you think is the significance of this sign? I submit that Jesus was himself giving God's blessing of Jacob
Gen. 27:28 May God give you of heaven's dew
and of earth's richness—
an abundance of grain and new wine.
Would they hear his call to come to him?
Isaiah 55:1 Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.
By showing that he had power in himself to keep the Old Covenant promises, he was showing his glory as the one ushering the New Covenant.
Theo, the exchange between Jesus & Mary is hardly a precedent for Christians to pray to Mary to intercede for us to Jesus.
3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

I would say it is a precedent, as Christ did change the water into wine. The significance of the OT scriptures you mention are compelling though of course this doesn't rule out the point I mentioned. After all, I labelled the point as "5" - it is neither one nor the other but all.

The exchange shows the relationship between Mother and Son. The Greek word translated as "woman" is a respectful term (as in other parts of the Gospels) - a respect not carried over in the English, where addressing one's mother as "woman" could be seen as positively disrespectful.
That Mary was present at Christ's first miracle (before the calling of the Apostles; Joseph is not mentioned, and may already have reposed) is significant I feel. Not significant in that it should detract from the other points mentioned though. It was a complimentary point to the others. _________________ ICXC NIKA! |
