Ironic (is it not?) that David Cameron has praised the Acadamies that Labour introduced and is attempting to distance his party from a commitment to Grammar Schools. Maybe that's what became of education, education, education.

Three cheers for grammar schools.

My Father (Lloyd George) had to leave school at 14. Mum (Doris Day)'s school submitted her artwork to the Art College & she was offered a place. Her father would not allow her to take it up. Both had menial jobs, until Dad joined the airforce & rose on merit to Flight Lieutenant. On demob, he went into teaching, (unqualified, half pay) awaiting a place at training college. He was such a good teacher that the school tried to keep him from college.

Our parents were naturally very keen that we should have the opportunities they were denied. In Southampton, most of the grammar schools & the specialist colleges were the other side of town, there being one RC & one mixed grammar school for the poor half. My brother & I won a place on merit to the King Edward VI Grammar School. I went on from there to the University of Hull.

When grammar schools were abolished, pupils went to the nearest school, & that brought immediate privilege education rather than merit.

Here's one view of the situation:
Quote:
Far from thwarting social mobility, the grammar schools were the main reason in the past that countless thousands of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds made it to good universities and prosperous lives. The reason fewer such young people now get on in this way is not the fault of the tiny number of grammar schools that remain, but because most of them have been abolished.

My prediction is that Brown will be as arrogant or more arrogant than Tony blair.

I predicted before Blair was PM that he would be a combination of DeGaulle and Thatcher. Sadly I was right.
