Can we get back on topic?

It is contrary to tradition, but I suppose we could.

Quote:

Literal interpretation is imo not interpretation at all. God has a spiritual meaning throughout the OT relating to Christ. (See Luke 24.) If we miss that, we haven't begun to understand the Scriptures.

Does anyone disagree?

Not sure if I'm disagreeing or just wanting clarification of your argument Cov.

Presumably by citing Luke 24 you mean to draw us to the Emmaus Road appearance and Jesus illuminating OT scripture (all there was at the time, of course) as pointing to the Messiah (i.e. himself).

My worry with what you have written is that you appear to be limiting a literal reading to the OT only and saying that approach is a wrong one. I think that the notion of literal interpretation extends into the NT as well and for me that narrow approach is also wrong. Or am I just reading you wrongly and missing an assumption on your part?

Much has been written on here in the past about adopting a literal approach to reading scripture. I don't think we need to rehash the arguments do we?

Jesus showed that even straightforward OT narrative has spiritual significance relating to himself. Jonah in the whale; David eating showbread; manna; etc, while Hebrews explains the significance of the OT priesthood in terms of Christ.

The NT is an explicit record of the life of Jesus, & the early church, & practical instruction for Christian living. I do not think that we should interpret it using the principles necessary for OT interpretation. Obviously Revelation is "signified" & needs interpretation.

I appreciate the point your making but are you being selective in which parts of the OT you attach a spiritual significance to or do you think that the entire OT has to be read for its spiritual application? Do the (sometimes limited) accounts of the various Judges for example have a special spiritual meaning or can they be read as a part of God's developing covenant relationship with His people?

I won't argue with you on that.

I hesitate to say that every incident & regulation in the OT has particular spiritual significance. I suggest however that all can be used as examples of faith or disobedience, along the lines of Heb. 11, or 1 Cor. 10. Principles rather than particulars.

Prophecy should be seen as primarily relating to Christ, his saving work & his kingdom.
