Col 4:2 (KJV)

2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

"Continue in prayer."

It is interesting to note how large a portion of Scripture is occupied with the subject of prayer, either in furnishing examples, enforcing precepts, or pronouncing promises.

We scarcely open the Bible before we read, "Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord;" Gen 4:26 and just as we are about to close the Bible, the "Amen" Rev 22:21 of an earnest supplication meets our ear.
Instances are plentiful. Here we find a wrestling Jacob--there a Daniel who prayed three times a day--and a David who with all his heart called upon his God. On the mountain we see Elias; in the dungeon Paul and Silas. We have multitudes of commands, and myriads of promises. What does this teach us, but the importance and necessity of prayer?

We may be certain that whatever God has made prominent in His Word, He intended to be conspicuous in our lives. If He has said much about prayer, it is because He knows we have a great need of it. So deep are our needs, that until we are in heaven we must not cease to pray.
Do you want nothing? Then, I’m afraid you do not know your need.
Have you no mercy to ask of God? Then, may the Lord's mercy show you you’re misery!
A prayer-less soul is a Christ-less soul.

Prayer is the lisping of the believing infant; the shout of the fighting believer; the mumbling of the dying saint falling asleep in Jesus.
It is the breath, the watchword, the comfort, the strength, the honour of a Christian. If you are a child of God, you will seek your Father's face, and live in your Father's love through prayer.

I confess I find it very hard to pray "officially" sometimes (as opposed to ongoing snippets of prayer all day long).

I seem to fall into one of two traps:

I either fall asleep or I lapse into very religious language.

Neither of which I want to do. Icon_1435

When I do manage it it is wonderful and I do believe you emerge from prayer changed (as opposed to having changed the Lords will whilst praying) and refreshed.

The Lord is kind, very much so!

I often think of Daniel praying three times a day, then I think of myself with the quick snippets that I make and the long time I try to spend in prayer eventualy leading to a deep sleep when only sometimes just starting Icon_sad

but I was comforted when it was explained we have two divine intercessors: Jesus Christ is at the right hand of the Father in heaven interceding on our behalf Rom. 8:34 Heb. 7:25, and the Holy Spirit in our hearts is also interceding John 14:16- 17. The Holy Spirit intercedes with groanings which cannot be uttered that ascend to the throne of grace.

What is this about religious language? Do you speak in tongues?

Yes, like Sisyphus said.

I tend to slip into very formal language sometimes, which is not what I want to do.

I do it in my posts too, sorry.

Note: being informal does not mean I want to be disrespectful to the Lord.

I don't believe informality to be disrespectful, you wouldn't talk to a loved parent or a loved child like that so why would you talk to your parent in heaven. Anyway, I should think He gets enough of the formal stuff from the 'high' churchers.... Icon_chuckle

It is easy to do though and like Anne I too fall into the formal trap, and want to stop myself doing it....

I use the "formal" language of prayer in church at mass, but any other time I just talk to God as I talk to you. Once,years ago, I was so frustrated in not being able to do something that I actually shouted angrily at God! Icon_swoon

I felt quilty about that for quite some time. The point I'm trying to make is that I just talk to God as just me. I think that's want He wants in the end after all.
In praising Him for something, I simply say "thank you"--for whatever, but my spirit feels near to bursting. You know the feeling?
